When hashing out a marketing plan, most small business owners struggle to decide where to focus their efforts. Email marketing or social media? While both on their own are great, utilizing them together is where many SMBs find success.

A recent Constant Contact study analyzed data from small businesses that combined their email marketing with social media marketing and compared it to those who use email marketing alone. It’s clear that SMBs should do both. Smallbiztechnology.com summarized the study’s key takeaways:

Faster list growth: From June 2010 through August 2011, those using both social media and email marketing saw 14.43 percent list growth, while those using only email marketing saw 8.96 percent list growth.

Larger average list size: Those using both tactics have email lists that are 53 percent larger on average than their email-only counterparts.

With a larger list, you can begin engaging more contacts that are aware of your brand which in turn will help your click through rates:

The average click-through rate for those using both email and social media marketing was 59.3 basis points higher than for those using email only.

It has become apparent that focusing too much on one aspect of your marketing can limit your potential. Why exclude one outreach channel when you put extra KAPOW! in your marketing by using email and social media?

Holy return on investment, Batman!

We all know how commercials during the Super Bowl cost an astronomical amount compared to advertising during the 3 a.m. reruns of Gilligan’s Island—for obvious reasons. The more eyes on your product, the more chances you’ll have to sell it. Likewise is true for a Super Bowl of another sort being played every second called Facebook.

If you want to put your company in front of the most eyes, leverage the site that holds the most attention of online users.

Recent statistics show that when people go online, they’re spending more time on Facebook than anywhere else, and as much as 16 percent of their time online is spent updating their status, chatting with friends or playing Farmville. Utilizing the most powerful tool on the web to get the word out about your business should be obvious, and more important than ever.

Facebook has been making many announcements the past few weeks, but this one has been long awaited. Facebook is now enabling Twitter updates from the Facebook site! While this information is hidden in a five page FAQ, the news is true. Now when an update is published on a Facebook page, Twitter will automatically send out the same message (as long as the accounts are set up properly).

To learn how to synchronize your accounts today, see the full article here.

Still skeptical about social media? Consider this: a recent study from the London Science Museum found that Brits would rather live without flushing toilets than live without the popular social network known as Facebook. They also gave higher rankings to the Internet, email and Google than clean drinking water, central heating and cars, respectively.

Wow.

Big Changes to Facebook’s Privacy Settings

Google faced the wrath of poor privacy settings and Facebook is now answering to its own complaints. According to a post on Mashable.com, these changes will fall into two main areas—privacy changes to user profiles and changes to how users share content.

Here are brief descriptions of the changes to come:

Profile privacy controls
The changes one used to have to hunt for will now be embedded directly on one’s profile page. Similar to Google+, Facebook will now offer the option to view a profile from a friend’s perspective rather than just the user’s perspective.

Changes to sharing
There is currently an option, when creating a post, to choose who can view this post. Facebook will be modifying this bar to be more user friendly. The Publisher bar now includes three elements: locations, tags and control over who can see your status update.

Who can tag you
According to this article, Facebook’s changes will allow anyone to tag you in a photo pending approval – even if you are not friends with the user.

Facebook Places
Checking in will now be done directly from the status update on the web and mobile applications. The check-in process will now be a tag from the publisher bar itself.

Untagging
Facebook has clarified the terms of untagging yourself as the following: “Now there are three options: untagging yourself from a photo, asking the photo uploader to remove the photo and blocking that person on Facebook.”
